Cougar jumps snowmoblier on West Slope of the Tetons

Another cougar attacks and kills llamas-

And Idaho Fish and Game doesn’t seem to need a better count of cougars or locations like they do wolves (not that I really want them collaring cougars too).

Mountain lions on the prowl. Feline killed in Alta, man jumped by cat near Jackpine Loop. Published: Thursday, December 31, 2009 12:16 AM MST. By Rachael Horne. Teton Valley News Staff.

For those not familiar with the Teton Range. This is on the “Idaho side” of the Tetons, most which is, nevertheless, still in Wyoming.

    Yup Jeff,

I sent that one this morning to Ralph, must not have got it, I found it an interesting story, of course, I have a very soft spot in me for Golden’s…I lost both of mine last year, and it really did touch a place in my heart..although, I am sorry the cat ended up loosing, I am glad the boy and the dog are ok

  2. Ralph Maughan Says:

I got it SB. Thanks! I appreciate the links people send me, although it might not always be apparent.

The big stories I usually find on my own pretty quick.

  3. Craig Says:

We were up Chuckar Hunting off the Southfork last week and had a huge Tom follow us through the brush above us, then it jumped up on a rock in front of my friend about 40 yards away. He shot over it’s head and it took off. Good thing we didn’t have dogs or it could of turned out bad.

  4. Ken Cole Says:

I used to live on the Jackpine/Pinochle Loop Road not far from where this happened. This is also close to where the man was mauled by a grizzly a couple of years ago when he went to see why his dog was barking.

Shortly after I left there I received a call from the IDFG to inform me that a grizzly was seen within 200 yards from our house. It’s an interesting and wild part of Idaho/Wyoming.

  5. JimT Says:

Leave the dogs at home when you are snowmobiling…

  6. Ryan Says:

“Leave the dogs at home when you are snowmobiling…”

Huh? The two activities rarely coincide unless one is running hounds for cats in the winter and a dog would have most likely deterred the attack.

  7. Save bears Says:

I was trying to figure out where the dog and snowmobiling came from, I didn’t see that in the articles…

  8. Layton Says:

I think the dog connection comes from a post from Craig, up above. He seems to think that cougars will come after dogs.

  9. Craig Says:

I never said Cougars would come after dogs! But sure as hell a bird dog would go after a cougar. This was a huge Tom and could have killed a dog with no problem, there was no trees for it to run up either.

  10. Ralph Maughan Says:

Of course a cougar will attack a dog just like it will a wolf. There are a lot of dead dogs and wolves around to prove it.

Things turn differently when the canids form into a pack or a group of chasing hounds.

  11. Ryan Says:

    Craig,

I think your getting Jimt’s post and yours confused. My friends GSP’s treed a cat a few years back when they were hunting phesants. It was quite the suprise for all involved to say the least. My GWP kills house cats onsite so I am always concerned when we out chasing chuckars and she’s hunting alone that her brain will not recognize the size difference.

  12. Craig Says:

I was replying to Laytons comment.

  13. mikarooni Says:

For some reason, this story makes me think we need many, many, many more mountain lions.

  14. Ryan Says:

“For some reason, this story makes me think we need many, many, many more mountain lions.”

    Mikarooni,

So what your saying is that Mt lion attacks on snowmobilers is a good thing? And yet you wonder why people think enviromentalists/animal rights people have a fucked up way of looking at things?

  15. Layton Says:

Sorry Craig, I took it that you were seeing things the other way – with the cat going after the dog. Sometimes the Internet gets that way.

    Ryan,

That’s just Mickarooni and Mike. It IS the way they look at things.

  16. mikarooni Says:

Oh, alright, no increase in lions if that’s how you feel. Avalanches …that’s the ticket, avalanches! Look out, Ethel, here it comes …plooosh!

  17. Save bears Says:

    Better watch out Miki,

You could be the next one in the face of that avalanche!

  18. Ryan Says:

    Mikarooni,

So what your saying is that snowmobilers gettting killed is a good thing, no matter how. Now I understand, that makes more sense. Geeze and to think I accused you of having a fucked up way of looking at things.

  19. josh sutherland Says:

Mikarooni and Mikes joyous way of thinking, PETA should recruit you dudes you could bring alot to the table.
